K.I.S.S.

My dad was a Marine and for many years growing up he was a Reserve Officer.  Whenever he’d help my sister and I with projects at school or even at home, he’d always tell us to K.I.S.S. – Marine speak for Keep It Simple Stupid.  Or in the case of impressionable young ladies, Keep It Simple Silly.
Either way, the premise was the same: simplicity is key.  When taking on something huge, keep it simple.  When feeling overwhelmed by a project, break it down to its basic parts.  Work on them one at a time. Figure out what fits where and then piece them together.
Why am I bringing this up now?
Remember those fabulous plotting sessions I mentioned from Desert Dreams?  Yeah, those.
Well, there were so many ideas and they all fit the story so well and combined with the motivation class I took and the plotting class I’m in the middle of and … well, you get the point.
I am overwhelmed with good ideas.  It’s a horrible position to be in, I know!
So I sat back and asked myself some questions.  What made me fall in love with my characters in the first place?  What made me want to tell their story?  What situations do I want them to go through together to realize they are perfect for each other?  What will they learn from each other?
I was in sore need of a kiss… err…K.I.S.S…
I remember the incidents I wanted them to experience: the roses, the incident with the watch, the dinner party.  All the drama and angst and misunderstandings.  So I wrote them out on sticky notes so I can move them around and put them in the order I want.  Kind of like a makeshift storyboard.
