In honor of Derby Day, we’re talking Mint Juleps!
One of the traditions of the Kentucky Derby is the sipping of a cool Mint Julep. According to the Derby website, this cocktail has been the traditional drink of the race for nearly 100 years.
There are many recipes out there for the traditional treat, but this is one from one of my FAVORITE celeb chefs (he has never steered me wrong before!)
Alton Brown’s Mint Julep
INGREDIENTS:
7 Mint leaves, plus 1 for garnish
1 1/2 teaspoons demerara sugar
Ice cubes
|
2 1/2 ounces Kentucky bourbon whiskey
Seltzer water
|
DIRECTIONS:
1. | Tear any large mint leaves into pieces, then combine mint leaves and the sugar in an old-fashioned glass or metal julep cup. Muddle these together with a muddler or back of a spoon for approximately 1 minute so the leaves release their essential oils but are still green. Add the bourbon and set aside for 5 minutes. |
2. | Meanwhile, wrap the ice cubes up in a clean towel and pound with a rolling pin to crush. Fill the glass with ice and top with a splash of seltzer water. Stir, garnish with remaining mint sprig, and serve immediately |
For kids, or those who don’t drink spirits, here is an alcohol-free version from All Recipes.
INGREDIENTS:
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves
|
2 cups crushed ice
1/2 cup prepared lemonade
Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish
|
DIRECTIONS:
1. | In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar and 1 tablespoon of chopped mint. Stir and bring to a boil. Cook until sugar has dissolved, then remove from heat and set aside to cool. After about an hour, strain out mint leaves. |
2. | Fill 2 cups or frozen goblets with crushed ice. Pour 1/2 of the lemonade into each glass and top with a splash of the sugar syrup. Garnish each with a mint sprig and a straw. Serve on a silver platter. |
