Sunday Snippet #45

Where a solution is had…

Previously on Sunday Snippets: Delaney, having burst into tears over the events of the evening, is comforted by her new friend, Miss Prudence Hewlett.

~oOo~

“Well,” Miss Hewlett said getting to her feet, “sitting here in tears isn’t going to solve anything. Now, let’s have a look at you.” She pulled Delaney to her feet and stepped back, her assessing gaze once again taking in the lowered neckline of the bodice.
“I’m afraid I got carried away when I tried to alter it,” Delaney mumbled, tugging at the bodice in an attempt to raise it higher.
“Don’t you worry, I know just the fix.”
Turning, she opened the door and whispered at the two women outside and something was passed between them.
Shutting the door, she returned and placed a gauzy fichu about Delaney’s shoulders, arranging the fine, transparent material so that it covered the worst of Delaney’s indecency. Then, after a moment of digging in her own reticule, she produced a ribbon with several colours of thread tied to it and a needle struck through.
“I’ve learned never to leave home without it,” she said before Delaney could ask. Removing a length of white thread already attached to the needle she began expertly stitching the fichu to the bodice, not once sticking her new friend with the needle.

Hmm…I wonder how many times Prudence has had need to repair a gown so that she now carries a needle and thread with her. Can’t say that I blame her really, I’ve been known to carry odd, useful things in my handbag on occasion.
Okay, okay, all the time! :)
I am happy to report that I am well on my way to actually finishing this book! A couple of plotting sessions, hashing out some scenarios with my writing partners and just vocalising what I have in mind is a great help to bring things into focus.
My new deadline is August 1st: the day of my chapter’s writing retreat. If I can get it to my critique group by then, it should be ready for submission mid-August, PitMad in September, and – if I’m brave enough – Golden Heart submission in December. Whew! I’m going to be quite busy!
Not only that, but my other characters are getting a little impatient and want me to tell their stories now. I have 2/3 of Stryker’s story plotted out and certain key scenes already written. He’s kind of pushy that way.
As always, make sure to dtop by the WeWriWa blog and Snippet Sunday page for more great snippets by great writers.
Happy reading (and first day of summer!) and I’ll see you next week. :)
