Once Upon A Winter's Eve

I’m making another debt in my TBR this week!

What I am reading this week

This week I’m reading Once Upon A Winter’s Eve by Tessa Dare. It’s a novella in the Spindle Cove series, officially numbered 1.5.

Why I chose this book

It was recently brought to my attention via the author’s facebook page that this book was being re-released with a new cover, and in print for the first time. While it’s not precisely a holiday story, it takes place in the winter, just before Christmas and was perfect fit for my December Reads.

About the book….don’t worry, there are NO spoilers!

When a bedraggled and injured stranger crashes the Officer’s Ball in Spindle Cove, it calls an abrupt end to the festivities. Speaking no English, he is brought to the only person who could possibly communicate with him: Violet Winterbottom.
Due to her facility with languages, Violet is pressed into service trying to discover his identity–only to realize that she knows exactly who he is. She plays along with his charade, using his identity against him to get some answers of her own.

What I enjoyed about it

I loved the mystery surrounding the stranger. How Violet knows who he is, but won’t reveal it until she gets some answers of her own. She is a woman who knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to use any means necessary to get it..including holding a pistol to his head.
Oh, Christian. I love how he risks everything to return to the woman he loves. His career, identity and life are at stake, but he will do whatever it takes to try and make up for the past. And he has quite a bit of making up to do…

Is this an author I’ve read before?

Oh, yes! I adore the books by Tessa Dare. The Spindle Cove series is one of my favorites. There’s something so refreshing about the outcasts who come to Spindle Cove, only to discover that what makes them odd in London is embraced and nurtured in the seaside village until they have thrive. Like all Tessa Dare heroines, they are not the usual Regency misses, but are intelligent and fiercely independent. It takes a special kind of hero to be worthy of these ladies.

What keeps me coming back for more?

Tessa Dare has a wit and humor to rival Jane Austen. Her books are full of strong heroines who know who they are and what they want, and the men who are their perfect match in wit and temperament to. They are so strong and sure of themselves, that it’s only fitting they be knocked on their backsides by love. No one is perfect in these stories, they all have their flaws and fears. But with the help and love of the right person, they work their way through it…together.

Isn’t the new cover delicious?!

Happy Reading!
